The SEO title is the clickable headline people see in search results. It comes from the page’s <title> tag, and it’s one of the clearest signals you can give search engines about what a page is about.

What is the SEO title in WordPress?

WordPress has two titles that are easy to mix up:

  • The post title is the heading you type at the top of the editor. Most themes show it on the page as the H1.
  • The SEO title is the <title> tag in the page’s code. It appears in search results and on the browser tab.

Without an SEO plugin, WordPress builds the SEO title from the post title and your site name, so they’re usually almost the same. With an SEO plugin you can set them separately, which is useful when the best heading for readers isn’t the best headline for search.

Where to change the SEO title with Yoast SEO

Open the post or page in the editor and find the Yoast SEO panel, either in the sidebar or below the content. In the search appearance section, edit the SEO title field. The preview shows how it will look in results.

To change the default pattern for all posts or pages at once, go to Yoast SEO → Settings and open the content type you want to change.

Where to change the SEO title with Rank Math

Open the post or page and click the Rank Math icon in the editor sidebar. Choose Edit Snippet and change the Title field.

Site-wide patterns live under Rank Math → Titles & Meta.

Where to change it without an SEO plugin

Without a plugin there’s no separate field: WordPress uses the post title, usually followed by your site name. You can change the site name in Settings → General → Site Title. To set SEO titles page by page, install an SEO plugin.

How to write a good SEO title

  • Lead with what people search for. “Sourdough classes in Leeds” beats “Welcome to our classes page”.
  • Keep it under about 60 characters, so it isn’t cut off in results.
  • Make every title unique. Pages with the same title compete with each other.
  • Put your brand name last, if you include it at all.
  • Match the page. A title that promises something the page doesn’t deliver loses the click back to the results.

Fixing titles across a whole site

On a site with dozens or hundreds of pages, missing, duplicate and overlong titles pile up quickly. OnPage Agent finds them on every daily audit, writes better titles in your brand voice and saves them into Yoast or Rank Math for you, so the fields stay where you’d expect them and every change can be undone.
